Nouveau and Deco (Assignment 8 )

The Assignment
End design should be on two pages sized 11x14 (up to 1" border if desired. This can be hand drawn or generated on a computer. At the end you will have one elements being used in two design composition.

1- Select an object, plant or an animal
2- Stylize the object in the Art Nouveau style for one composition and the Art Deco Style in another composition.
3- Incorporate appropriate embellishments to fill the frame and complete the composition.
4 - Have the elements of the different design styles relate to each other
Things to consider are:
  • Materials to use in creating the design.
  • Understanding the stylistic features of Art Nouveau and Art Deco well enough to design in the style.
  • Create a compelling relationship between the two compositions
  • Consider elements beyond the primary object(s) you may wish to add to the composition, making them fit and improve your design
  • Consider which element(s) will be the most prominent in the design and how will you achieve this.
  • Placement of the objects within the composition to lead the eye
  • The ability to justify your decisions and show your process.
Post finished work to your blog, turn in finished compositions in class. Write on your blog your design intent and process for the compositions.
The Animal

This was taken mid way up Tumble Down Mountain in Weld, ME.
Art Nouveau Style

Art Deco Style

The Process
I picked myself as a starting point. I then cropped my image in Photoshop and placed in a new drawing. This was the easy part. How do I take my image and incorporate it into Art Nouveau Style and Art Deco Style compositions?
Well after searching many examples of what the two different represent I came up with these two renditions of my image. I found that there isn't such a fine line of what each style's prominent characteristics contain, more of a vague overlapping generalized grouping of similarities for each style.
Art Deco Style tends to contain some Art Nouveau Style.

Assignment 6 (Color / Typography)

The Assignment  Part 1
Materials = Photoshop (imaging computer or hand tools, paint kit and brushes

Select 4 words that relate to ‘custom’ color (salmon, sea foam, berry, sand, etc).
Select 4 words that relate to an adjective (friendly, powerful, soggy, small, etc).
Create a design for each word where the meaning is expressed through the way it is written (typography, text and image)

Pair the words in your sketch book (one color one adjective) and create a composition using these two word-elements, relating to each other through size, orientation, relation to frame, etc

Select one of the pairs of words to do the color assignment

Using ONLY the colors TITANIUM WHITE, LEMON YELLOW, BRILLIANT RED, and BLUE LAKE, mix the color that that best expresses your custom color

Using ONLY the colors TITANIUM WHITE, LEMON YELLOW, BRILLIANT RED, and BLUE LAKE, mix the color that that best expresses the color of your adjective.

Paint both of the words on a single piece of canvas board.

The All Seeing Eye of Color Colour

 The Creativeness Behind The Design

Color is the adjective and Colour is the ‘custom’ color.
What is the color/colour of color/colour (respectively)?
If you refer to colormatters.com
Then
A basic understanding of how colors are created is the first step in providing correct answers. Here are two examples of how colors exist:
The color of a tangible object is the result of pigments or molecular coloring agents. For example, the color of a red apple is the result of molecular coloring agents on the surface of the apple. Also, a painting of a red apple is the result of red pigments used to create the image.
The colors of objects viewed on a television set or on a computer monitor are the result of colored light. If you're not familiar with how colors are created by light, look at your monitor or television screen close up. Put your eye right up against the screen. A small magnifying glass might help. This is what you will see.

A simplified way to explain it is that the color of a red apple on a computer or television is created by photons of red light that are transmitted within the electronic system.
With this in mind
Again I asked?
What is the color/colour of color/colour (respectively)?
I chose to represent the color as pigments or molecular coloring agents.
Hence when you look at each word (Color or  Colour) you see a scaled up version of what the eye sees. (which is our primitive tool for depecting color)

The Assignment  Part 2

Switch boards with a classmate and try to match their color and design on a different piece of canvas board.

Classmate Brian Sherwood made this 12" x 12" project.

Check out Brian Sherwoods Blog
http://sherwoodb636.blogspot.com/

I scaled it down to fit the 8" x 6" canvas I  had and ended up with this pretty close copy.

It wasn't easy mixing the paint to match. I'm close, but still off a bit.

The Important Part
What Did I Learn?

I learned that:

Typography and color in 2D design is all about being creative.

Color is in the eye of the beholder.

Opinions (although necessary in art) are like assholes,
everyone has one.
HeHe :)~

It's hard to remix someone elses color mix by eye.

Time waits for no one.

There are no rules in ART.
